But will try it again in other cities in order to see if I can achieve the same high spicy level. It’s perfect if you try it in the commercial street of Changsha as, being Hunan, you can get really spicy flavors and well, this tofu is already delicious, if it is also really spicy it becomes divine. But want to try something even more smelly, capable to stand with most of the smelliest Italian cheeses? And something which is also really DELICIOUS? Let’s come to China. If we go to Asian countries, we find for example fermented beans based recipes (the Japanese Nattō is an example). Italy is surely not the only country where you can find smelly but delicious food. An example is surely Gorgonzola cheese, which is really smelly (some people say it is as smelly as feet), but yummy. Italy features various kinds of cheeses and, some of them, are well known for their strong odor. The dish is delightfully fragrant, with a tender exterior and creamy centre, and the pungent and spicy cabbage topping contrast well with the nutty tofu flavour.įor the next taste test, stroll 50m up the road to number 140, Gu Zao Cuo (古早厝), a three-storey mansion fronted by roiling woks of tofu and a rack of succulent yellow chicken. Order skewers of what they call “traditional recipe tofu" served with pickled spicy shredded cabbage, sit under the nearby banyan tree and dig in. And of course almost all serving one just thing: variations of stinky tofu!īegin the tour with barbecued tofu on bamboo skewers at Jin Da Ding (金大鼎), reportedly one of the oldest stalls on the street, dating back around five decades.
